Split between the main house and the Garden wing, and elegantly and simply furnished, each room at the Painswick has its very own character and charm and a beautifully styled bathroom. The two cosy Small Rooms are in the eaves of the Garden wing and come with super comfortable king size beds and lofty views, and their own pantry stocked with homemade treats from the chef. For a bit more space, the Medium Rooms have a restorative quality to them, looking out over the Painswick valley.
Each of the four Big Rooms is more quirky in style, with a sitting area and unique furnishing detail. Move up to the Bigger Rooms for, as the Painswick says, all the bells and whistles. Or take the George’s Suite, with its four poster bed, separate living area warmed by a toasty wood burner and a balcony from which you can survey the surrounding countryside.
food
You will certainly not leave the Painswick hungry. There’s a very tempting menu, packed with flavour and some delicious combinations. We struggle to choose from the choice of starters – we could eat all of them. The chef, Jamie McCallum comes with a strong pedigree, and his brasserie style dishes are most definitely worth the trip. Don’t leave without having an afternoon tea in the Hearth or in the gardens, and have at least one of the Smorgasbords of tasty nibbles. Breakfasts are hearty with lashings of homemade pastries, granola and very good cooked to order dishes.

If you know the Cotswolds, then you’ll also know that the possibilities for exploring are endless. Fabulous walks; a tremendous choice of places to eat; historic houses and castles; gardens and honey coloured villages bulging with galleries and boutique shops. The Painswick Rococo Gardens, established in 1740 should not be missed, and if you visit in early Spring, they are a carpet of snowdrops.
The hotel can organise bike hire for adventures further afield, or just walk right from the door into the surrounding countryside on one of the many paths. There’s a local vineyard, and wine tasting and tours come highly recommended. If you just want to relax and restore your batteries, there are two treatment rooms.

The Painswick welcomes families with open arms. The larger rooms can be fitted with extra beds and the gardens and surrounding countryside offer plenty of space for running around. If you haven’t brought a dog with you, then your children can take an alpaca for a walk from a farm close by!
