Hotel Tresanton – Cornwall, England
A collection of little houses on the edge of St Mawes, with terraces and a path all the way down to the sea, Tresanton is like a village itself. And with one of the most stylish names in the hotel world as the proprietor, it’s no wonder we love it here. It has one of the most perfect spots on this part of the Cornish coast, and it’s not difficult to spend many an hour sitting on the terrace, looking out across the sparkling sea. Olga Polizzi’s flair is evident everywhere.
The hotel is elegantly furnished with an eclectic mix of antiques and sculptures and artwork by local artists, giving an air of refinement and relaxation. Outside, the terraces of The Beach Club are a real draw, and the subtropical gardens transport you to distant climes. Utterly fabulous staff make you welcome the minute you arrive – so it doesn’t take long to know that you’re on holiday. And it’s one of the reasons why guests return again and again. That, and the food and relaxing Cornish vibe.

rooms
We love attention to detail, and that’s exactly what you’ll find in each and every room and suite. Spread across five separate houses, they are all completely individual, beautifully styled and decorated, to the point that they feel like a private house. Many of the doubles can be made into twins, and there’s space for cots in lots of them. All but two have a sea view and many have their own terrace.
As you would expect with a hillside property, there are lots of steps to many of the rooms, but it’s worth it! In Little Tresanton there are two Spacious Rooms with king size beds, seating areas and baths with overhead showers, and a Favourite Room has a king size bed, large bathroom and its own private terrace. Main Tresanton, where you have Reception and hotel living areas, houses five Spacious Rooms, some of which have their own terrace. There are two larger Favourite Rooms, one with a terrace and the other with a lovely big window with views out over the bay. There are six Medium Rooms, which have a mix of king size beds and large doubles, rain forest showers or bath tubs with overhead showers. Many of the cosier Small Rooms can interconnect, and are also a mix of king size beds and large doubles. Upper Tresanton has arguably the finest views, being that much higher than the other houses, it also hosts the hotel’s largest suite. The Lamorran Suite has three bedrooms (two king size and one bunk room) and two bathrooms, a very spacious living and dining area, and a long terrace looking straight out over St Mawes Bay. The two bedroom, two bathroom Family Suite (both with king size beds which can be made into twins) has a balcony and spectacular views. There are two Spacious Rooms here, one of which can interconnect with the Small Room, both of which have balconies. The Nook is a little house at the front of the property with three bedrooms – two Favourite Rooms with king size beds, baths and walk in showers, and a Medium Room that has no sea view, but it does have its own terrace looking out over the hotel itself. In Rock Cottage, the Garden Room is the only other room without a sea view, but as the name suggests, it has its own Mediterranean style garden with table and loungers. There is another Family Suite with two bedrooms and a little self-catering kitchen and balcony. The Forte Suite is the one to book for a romantic retreat. Spacious, with a king size bed, separate living area and wood burner, it also has a private terrace.
food
How does dining on thoroughly delicious local and seasonal produce sound? There is no shortage of locally caught seafood, from hand dived scallops to Fowey mussels. The restaurant, with its south facing views and terrace, has a Mediterranean feel. Just above the water line, there’s a beach club, where light lunches and fresh juices are served from May to September. Make sure you’re there for the Sunday barbeque served on the main terrace during July and August.. And for a more informal setting, the Dog’s Bar is a cosy place for families, and yes, your dog too.
activities
There’s a very good reason why Cornwall is on so many people’s list of favourite places to go. There are simply endless things to do and see, topped by having some of the best beaches in the country. From paddle boarding and kayaking to fishing trips and chartering the hotel’s own private yacht Pinuccia with a crew and a picnic, you could spend your entire time in and around it. The South West Coastal Path is close by offering spectacular walking, and not far away is the Eden Project and the Lost Gardens of Heligan.
The coastline is dotted with little fishing villages and you’re always within easy reach of very good places to eat. And in St Mawes itself there are galleries and boutiques and cafés – making it a browser’s haven. The hotel also offers a range of spa treatments to further help guests unwind.
family
Beaches, buckets, spades and plenty of ice cream… all the ingredients for an idyllic family holiday. Hotel Tresanton definitely knows how to look after children, with its playroom, and garden with a playhouse and organised activities during school holidays. There are fishing nets and crabbing lines you can borrow, and a children’s menu available all day. The hotel also has a cinema room and a vast collection of DVDs. Families can take a suite or interconnecting rooms, and some of these rooms will be suitable for your dog too.
